Flute Inventor - Who Invented Flute? - History of the Flute in India
The Hindu deity Krishna is often pictured as a sheepherder who plays the flute and it is often associated with magical or seductive powers. In addition, the bansuri enjoys a distinguished place in the history of Indian music and mythology.
In India the flute has been known by many names in addition to bansuri: algoza, bansi, kolalu, kolavi, kukhl, murali, nar, pava, pillankuzhal, pillangrovi, pulangoil, vanu, and vamsi. Under this variety of names, the flute was used in both sacred and secular contexts up until at least the sixteenth century.
In the fifteenth century after the invasion of the Moghuls, the development of Gharanas or schools of music came about in the courts of North India leading to the advent of what has become known as Hindustani music.
The flute was left out of the repertoire for the most part as it was seen as too basic of an instrument. The flutes high pitch was considered unsuitable for the full range of expression. Primarily found and used in folk music, the Indian Classical flute was developed into a classical musical instrument by legendary flutist Pannalal Ghosh.
He transformed the tiny folk instrument into a bamboo flute (32 inches long with seven finger holes) suitable for playing traditional Indian classical music. In addition, there was no established form of construction or pitch centre for the flute.

Requirements: This course requires patience. Learning Indian Classical Music is a journey and this course attempts to provide a foundation. Though I have tried to simplify and structure things to the best of my knowledge, some of the lectures may seem repetitive but it’s needed to gain a better understanding. You need to have an Indian drone-instrument (Tanpura) and a Tabla. An eTabla-pro app (for Apple users) is a good option. For Android etc. you can try an App with good ratings. If you do have some background in Indian Classical Music then some of the Lectures may seem familiar.
Description: The course is about Indian voice music, where one can learn the music of India. Initially, I will be covering Indian Classical Music, which is the root of all Indian Music. One needs to have an Indian drone-instrument called Tanpura and a Tabla, which is an Indian Percussion for creating beats.
Classical music is classified into four groups: Voice- production training. Indian note-syllables training (SWARA). Knowledge about Indian beats-rhythms (TAAL). Raga-improvisation. There are a plethora of Indian music lovers in all parts of the world. But conceptualizing ‘what is Indian Classical’ and its proper training is still lacking its persistence. Therefore, one should definitely take this course to make Indian music singing and training-steps more accessible and approachable at any time.
Who this course is for: The course is intended for people who have an interest in learning Indian Music discipline. No prior knowledge is required to take this course. You just need to have the interest to sing, without hesitation. I expect you to have patience and also to practice regularly for 20 minutes. There are many classical elements which are vocalized and develop through time. I don’t want my students to get agonized by the course. Practice and enjoying own singing is the only way out.
